Animal world-Amazing friendship

In Leningrad (St Petersburg) Zoo, the oldest zoo in Russia, an European Lynx had a frequent visitor who befriended the big wild cat and now they are practically living together. This visitor is a calico cat who has bonded with the Lynx ever since the day she entered the enclosure.

According to the local people, the calico was homeless and happened to find food in the lynx’s enclosure. The lynx did not reject her, rather she became her surrogate mother. It seems as if the calico needs the lynx as much as she needs the little cat. They spend every day together and never leave sight of each other.

Amazing animal-Finger monkey

The finger monkey is the tiniest living primate in the world. It’s so small that it can hold on to your finger. This cute little primate hugs and grips on to your finger so tight that it pulls your heartstrings and you wish you could take it home with you. Finger monkeys are, as a matter of fact, pygmy marmosets. They are also known by the names ‘pocket monkey’ and ‘tiny lion’. These primates belong to the family Callitrichidae, species Cebuella and genus C. pygmaea. They are native to rain-forests of Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Colombia.

Amazing facts-Chinese woman adopts 1500 Dogs, 200 Cats

Chinese Woman Adopts 1500 Dogs, 200 Cats

Ha Wenjin, a dog lover from China, has given up her job, sold her house, car and jewelry to take care of over 1,500 dogs and 200 cats.

The middle-aged woman says she started out with just a few dogs that she could tend to in her spare time, but as their number kept growing, she had to give up her career and spend her entire day caring to the dogs’ needs. Before she knew it, she practically had her personal animal shelter, complete with 10 workers who look after the dogs, and 2 more who take care of the cats.

amazing-factsLIFE Magazine first reported on Ha Wenjin‘s amazing animal shelter, in 2006, and the resourceful woman managed to keep the facility outside Nanjing running until now. She had a number of volunteers coming in at least once a week to check on the dogs, and people donated most of the food. But now, the 1,500 dogs and 200 cats have to move to a new home, as Chinese government officials reclaimed the land the shelter is built on, and threaten to close the place down.

Ha Wenjin had to act fast, and find a cheap but large enough space, where her beloved pets could relocate to. She managed to find it in Houyu village, far away enough from human settlements, because she admits 1,500 dogs are not quiet. Now all she has to do is find enough volunteers to help her move the dogs with the help of four buses, and clean the vehicles afterwards. Ha Wenjin definitely has her work cut out for her, but she has no intention of giving up in her fight to save as many stray dogs and cats as she can.

Back in 2006, LIFE Magazine reported it cost around $37,500 a year to take care of the dogs, but now, with more than double the number of animals, you can imagine how tough it is for Ha Wenjin to keep her animal center open, especially with no help from local authorities. Luckily, most of the food comes from donations, but there are many other things that cost a lot of money.

Amazing animal-Fat squirrel

While the rest of the squirrels in the garden tend to put a few nuts aside for the winter, this tubby customer clearly believes in eating them all at once. He is a regular visitor to the feeding stations kept well stocked by animal lover James Phelps. Too regular, in fact. Mr Phelps, 51, has seen the fox squirrel, a native of North America, become so overweight that a low-calorie diet would seem to be required.

amazing-animal"He became used to me being around and probably associated me with food,’ he said at his home in Michigan. I would usually feed him myself, but sometimes my wife would help out. She also became fond of him because he’s so cute.'Many mornings he would be waiting for me to bring out the food, lounging on the deck looking into the house. Often he would stand and beg for more."

‘He makes a great subject for photography. He has great expressions, is curious and very smart. He’s the best-fed squirrel in Michigan and I guess that’s the reason he got so big.’

Bizarre events-Goat tossing festival

The Spanish certainly like their odd festivals. Every year on the fourth Sunday in January, the locals of a small town named Manganeses de la Polvorosa gather together for the goat tossing festival, in honor of St Vincent de Paul, their patron saint. The festival has been around for so long that no one knows when it started. It involves a young man who finds a goat in the village, ties it up, and takes it to the top of the local Church belfry. He then tosses the goat over the side and it falls 50 feet where it is (hopefully) caught by villagers holding up a sheet of tarpaulin. The village officials banned the event but it continues regardless. Various animal rights agencies have complained about it - though their complaints have also been ignored.

Amazing animal-Pangolin

A pangolin is a very rare mammal of tropical Africa.

Pangolin are shy and mainly solitary. They are well-armoured with large, hardened, equally-spaced overlapping scales, making them look like a pine cone. Pangolin know how to protect themselves very well when threatened, by rolling into a ball and erecting their scales pointing upward. The creatures eat ants and termites.

amazing-animal
Pangolin are thought to be magical - people believe the sight of one will bring them seven years of prosperity.

When caught by large predators such as lions they work their muscles into a cutting action to lacerate the mouths of their adversaries. The injuries caused can be serious for the animal attempting to eat the pangolin. Pangolin survive by using their sensitive tongues, which can grow up to 16 inches long, to probe ant nests and termite mounds to eat the insects inside.

Crabs

Volunteers sweep migrating red crabs off a road on Christmas Island. The migrating crabs face numerous hazards, such as traffic and predators, on their journeys, and many do not reach their destination.

Animal world-Lion cannot eat Pangolin

When you're a hungry lion, most animals probably seem like a good bet at snack time. But this lion certainly bit off more than it could chew when it pounced on a pangolin.

British wildlife guide Mark Sheridan-Johnson captured on film this inquisitive big cat which spent a long time trying to devour the odd looking creature in the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. The rare, Armour plated pangolin had the perfect defence tactic:roll up into a ball and stay there - whatever happens.

animal-world
The images show how the hapless lion appeared confused by its spherical prey, as it batted the creature about with its paws and even tried to carry it around in its mouth.

animal-world
Mr Sheridan-Johnson, 31, from Newcastle, was showing a group of tourists around the game reserve when he spotted the little pangolin battling for its life. 'The pangolin is an extremely difficult animal to see and is considered by many guides in Africa to be the holy grail of sightings,' he said.

'You can spend your whole life driving round the bush and never see one. So when we came across one being attacked by a lion, we could not believe our eyes. '

'The pangolin was obviously having a really bad day.'

animal-world
Pangolins are nocturnal animals and according to Mark, this one was peacefully sheltering in bushes before being smelt out by the two-year-old lion.

'We were all on the side of the pangolin, hoping he would make it out alive,' he said.

'The lion really didn't know what to do with it. She was getting more and more frustrated by the situation. The scales are so sharp that carrying the pangolin around can't have been very pleasant.'
animal-world
The pangolin's shell is made of an organic bony structure called keratin and makes up to around twenty percent of the animal's body weight.

Animal world-Fawn fights back

Often it is the minnows, the underdogs, that deserve our praise more than the A-list. Injured and abandoned, a lone wildebeest fawn tottered up and down a stinking pool. This foot of water was the only respite from the attentions of three young lions...

Finally with hunger overcoming feline fear of water, a medium-sized female closed in...

The inevitable coup de grace surely lay ahead...

Moments later, the lioness was fleeing, pursued by a furious wildebeest one-third of its size. Dripping blood from previous injuries, this callow calf showed the now disgraced lion a clean set of cloven heels...

The calf succeeded in driving away the lioness.
