The Bonfires of Saint John is a popular festival in Spain held on the 19th to the 24th of June. The strange festival involves the lighting of bonfires (frequently fueled by old furniture). The locals share hot chocolate whilst watching the bonfires. But then it gets weird. The children of the villages then take turns in running through the fires. The entire week is filled with festivities including fireworks displays and eighty-six women and eighty-six young girls are elected the “Beauties” of the bonfires. These “beauties” preside over the festival as Queens.

A eunuch is a castrated man; the term usually refers to those castrated in order to perform a specific social function, as was common in many societies of the past.
In ancient China castration was both a traditional punishment (until the Sui Dynasty) and a means of gaining employment in the Imperial service.
At the end of the Ming Dynasty there were 70,000 eunuchs in the Imperial palace.
The value of such employment—certain eunuchs gained immense power that may have superseded that of the prime ministers—was such that self-castration had to be made illegal. The number of eunuchs in Imperial employ had fallen to 470 in 1912, when their employment ceased. Eunuchs castrated before puberty were also valued and trained in several cultures for their exceptional voices, which retained a childlike and other-worldly flexibility and treble pitch.
Such eunuchs were known as castrati. Unfortunately the choice had to be made at an age when the boy would not yet be able to consciously choose whether to sacrifice his sexual potency, and there was no guarantee that the voice would remain of musical excellence after the operation.

Michael Dick had been travelling around the UK with his family to track down his daughter, Lisa - who he had lost contact with ten years earlier.
After a long fruitless search, he approached the Suffolk Free Press, who agreed to help him by putting an appeal in their newspaper.
Fortunately, his long lost daughter saw the appeal and the pair were reunited.
The odd thing was, his daughter had been right behind him when the free paper took the photograph - shown in the photograph above. What are the chances of that!

In 1996, Paris police set out to investigate a late night, high speed car crash, both drivers had been killed instantly.
Investigations revealed that the deceased were in fact man and wife.
Police initially suspected some kind of murder or suicide pact but it became apparent that the pair had been separated for several months - neither could have known that the other would have been out driving that night - it was just a terrible coincidence.

When you're a hungry lion, most animals probably seem like a good bet at snack time. But this lion certainly bit off more than it could chew when it pounced on a pangolin.
British wildlife guide Mark Sheridan-Johnson captured on film this inquisitive big cat which spent a long time trying to devour the odd looking creature in the Selous Game Reserve in Tanzania. The rare, Armour plated pangolin had the perfect defence tactic:roll up into a ball and stay there - whatever happens.
The images show how the hapless lion appeared confused by its spherical prey, as it batted the creature about with its paws and even tried to carry it around in its mouth.
Mr Sheridan-Johnson, 31, from Newcastle, was showing a group of tourists around the game reserve when he spotted the little pangolin battling for its life. 'The pangolin is an extremely difficult animal to see and is considered by many guides in Africa to be the holy grail of sightings,' he said.
'You can spend your whole life driving round the bush and never see one. So when we came across one being attacked by a lion, we could not believe our eyes. '
'The pangolin was obviously having a really bad day.'
Pangolins are nocturnal animals and according to Mark, this one was peacefully sheltering in bushes before being smelt out by the two-year-old lion.
'We were all on the side of the pangolin, hoping he would make it out alive,' he said.
'The lion really didn't know what to do with it. She was getting more and more frustrated by the situation.The scales are so sharp that carrying the pangolin around can't have been very pleasant.'

Also, they were not burned at stake. As any witch-hunter would know, a true witch could never be killed by this method. Hanging was the usual method - though one was crushed to death under heavy stones.

British cavalry officer Major Summerford was fighting in the fields of Flanders in the last year of WW1, a flash of lightning knocked him off his horse and paralysed him from his waist down.
He moved to Vancouver, Canada, six years later, whilst out fishing, Major Summer field was struck by lightning again and the right side of his body became paralysed.
After two years of recovery, it was a summers day and he was out in a local park, a summer storm blew up and Major Summerfield was struck by lightning again - permanently paralysing him.
He died two years after this incident.
However, four years after his death, his stone tomb was destroyed - it was struck by lightning!

The demolition of the former Ohio Edison Mad River Power Plant’s 275-foot smoke stack in Springfield, Ohio, went awry because the demolition crew failed to notice a crack in the structure. The collapsing tower knocked down a pair of high-voltage electrical power lines and smashed into a building housing generators. Luckily no one was injured.

In 1893, Henry Ziegland ended a relationship with his girlfriend.
Tragically, his girlfriend took the news very badly, became distraught and took her own life.
Her distressed brother blamed his sister's death upon Henry, he went round to Henry's house, saw him out in the garden and tried to shoot him.
Luckily, the bullet only grazed Henry's face and embedded itself in a nearby tree.
In 1913, twenty years after this incident, Henry decided to use dynamite to uproot a tree in his garden. The explosion propelled the embedded bullet from the tree straight into Henry Ziegland's head - killing him immediately.
Tragically, his girlfriend took the news very badly, became distraught and took her own life.

Amazing animals-Bear, Lion and Tiger form an unusual friendship
An American animal shelter has got three friends it fondly refers to as "BLT." The bear, lion and tiger were rescued when they were all about two months old eight years ago.
The trio is now inseparable, as they were raised together. Named Baloo (the bear), Leo (the lion), and Shere Khan (the tiger), they were found together when police raided a drug dealer's premises in 2002. The three have lived at Noah's Ark Animal Rehabilitation Center and Children's Care Home ever since. The trio have a Facebook fan page. Staffer Diane Smith told the Mirror:
“It is magical to see a giant American Black Bear put his arm around a Bengal tiger and then to see the tiger nuzzle up like a domestic cat.”
People can visit the animal sanctuary, although it is advised one should call ahead to ensure they are open. Noah's Ark does have some dogs it will adopt out. Not only home to unique animals in need of caring homes, Noah's Ark also runs a group home for up to 24 children, from birth to 18 years of age. The animal facility is home for up to 1,000 animals.
