A bear cub was shot by authorities in California after it got stuck up a pine tree while scavenging for food.
After residents noticed the cub roaming the streets, about 40 Los Angeles firefighters, police, wildlife experts and officials from the Californian Department of Fish and Game arrived to find the bear stranded up the tree. Authorities were forced to shoot the animal, which weighed more than 100 pounds, with a tranquilliser dart after it became distressed up the tree.
The black cub fell about 15 feet from the tree.....and into a safety mat below. The cub was later returned to the wild in the nearby mountains.
Fish & Game officer George Struble talks to the media after he tranquilized the bear cub. Harry Morse, a spokesman for the state Department of Fish and Game, told the Los Angeles Times that officials had rescued a bear from a busy freeway the previous week. "It's always unusual to see a bear that wandered that far into a major suburban area," he said. "This time of the year is when mothers kick [the young cubs] off. They are usually about 1 1/2 years old. This bear was probably looking for a place to live. It doesn't have all the skills for gathering food"
